As our first ever completely, or at least, mostly, online semester is fast approaching, I'm sure we've all spent at least some time searching the internet for tips, tricks, and advice on how to succeed in an online learning environment. And though we might just need to experience this semester for ourselves to discover what works best for us, rest assured because there is already-established research on why online learning works, not just for us, but as a concept in itself. You may be surprised to learn, however, that there are many benefits online learning has over traditional face-to-face learning, including but not limited to how you are able to:
1. Learn how you want to, wherever and whenever: And although it is completely up to you where and when you learn, here are some suggestions that may help you have an easier time managing your workload:
Set up a space (or several spaces) that you intend to use for your online classes.
Try to mimic the classroom environment that you are already used to if you find you learn well in a classroom setting.
Limit distractions by wearing headphones or earphones, and by choosing a desk that faces the wall in a low-traffic area.
Most importantly, build up a routine for when you learn! This will make it easier for you to consistently put out great and sustainable work.
2. Easier scheduling
You can now take back-to-back classes without worrying about if you will be able to make the faraway class in time, and alternatively, take classes that are hours apart without stressing over staying on campus for longer than you want to! You can also schedule meetings, and perhaps even some time for yourself between classes, without worrying about commute times and logistics.
3. Participate in class from the comfort of your own home
Anxious about raising your hand in class and participating? Feel like you never have enough time to think through your answer beforehand, or that you can't remember your classmates' answers (that provided an alternate interesting perspective)? With online classes, you may be asked to contribute your thoughts using OWL forum posts instead of speaking up in class, which will let you present your thoughts in a more detailed manner. These OWL forums will also act as an archive for all of your classmates' thoughts, which you may find useful, just as your classmates may find your contributions helpful!
DIY Activity - for those (all of us) at home:
Keep in mind that these are the top three things I find most helpful about online learning - your top three benefits may be completely different! If you want, you could also create your own personalized top three list of things you're looking forward to with online learning, and also a list of three things that you anticipate may be challenging to grow accustomed to - these two lists will help you both stay positive, and also allow you to prepare yourself for a semester that is different from what you're used to.
